UPDATE: IRS will allow filing on February 14, 2011

This is an update to my previous post regarding delayed tax filings. The IRS had initially said there would be a delay for individuals filing Schedule A, Higher Education Tax Deductions, and teachers claiming classroom expenses. In a bit of good news it seems we now have a firm date from the IRS now on when you can file if you are affected by this delay. The IRS announced today that they would begin accepting returns on February 14, 2011. Again, this only affects you if you itemize deductions on Schedule A, have a student loan or deduct tuition expenses, and/or are a teacher deducting classroom expenses.

House Fire – South Bethany Beach, Delaware

More videos from a house fire on South 3rd Street in South Bethany Beach Delaware. The fire was dispatched at approximately 6pm.  The original dispatch address was for South 5th Street, however, the correct address is on S. 3rd St. The house is located on the east side of Coastal Highway and is the first house on the left. Tax Law Changes Result in Delayed Filings…Your kidding right?

As is my usual routine, I like to wake up and read various news sites on the Internet to see what is going on in the world. As soon as I opened CNN.com I was shocked to see the following headline: 50 million taxpayers must delay filing – IRS. Surprisingly I am almost ready to file my taxes, and of course I clicked on the link. As a college student I rely on my tax refund to offset the costs associated with school. Students can deduct up to $4000 of their tuition costs which for me is a huge benefit.

Facebook Privacy Settings

I often get asked by friends and family how I configured my Facebook privacy settings to allow some people to see posts/photos/friends lists/etc.. and others not to. I am not quite sure the reasoning behind Facebook’s complicated privacy settings, but in all honesty if you dig down into them they are pretty powerful. Maybe this is why they hide them, so that inexperienced users don’t end up blocking everybody from seeing everything (which is completely possible).

My Linode is slow and crashing

I have been running this blog on Linode for a few months now. I got to say that I absolutely love Linode. While I would consider myself fairly technical, there are some aspects of the Linux environment that I am either lacking, or absolutely clueless on. I, however, have the motivation to learn new things and have vowed that completely understanding the Linux environment is one of those things. So when I have issues, I am more than happy to investigate, troubleshoot, and fix them on my own before opening a support ticket. The great thing about Linode is that they have taken the time to put together an awesome set of documentation and FAQ. And if those don’t help you the community support surely will.

How Sears Ruined My Christmas…Almost…

It wouldn’t be Christmas for me if I didn’t wait until the last minute to buy a gift. While I had ideas for my mom’s gift, I had been trying to figure out which one I wanted to go with. In the end I decided for a multi-disc CD player. I wanted something portable, or at least somewhat portable for her. Long story short, I was unable to find exactly what I was looking for that was either affordable or “portable”. In the end I decided to purchase one from Sears. While there are no Sears near me, there is one close to my parents house. I figured I would order online and have it set for store pickup.

Do I need a copyright notice on my website?

There was an article at fient.me today entitled “Copyright notices on websites. Needed?“. While the article is for the most part accurate, I believe there are a couple clarifications that must be made. I am by no means an attorney, but I have researched this issue significantly and here is what I have found.

Why the Washington Redskins suck

I am a diehard Washington Redskin fan! I have been for as long as I can remember. I have stuck by them through good and bad (sadly the bad seems to be more often than the good). I live in the DC area and can’t open a newspaper or turn on a local sports report without hearing something new about the Redskins every day. I have a different opinion than most in the area though. While I am not a big Dan Snyder fan, I am also not a Dan Snyder hater. Yes, he has done a lot of things that are questionable and make apparent his lack of knowledge of running a major sports organization with deep history. I will not deny that things were much better under Jack Kent Cooke and that the sale of the team to Snyder has put it on a downward spiral. But I believe that Snyder may be starting to come around a little over the last year or two. While he has a long way to go, he is learning that he needs to keep his hands off the team.
